Kentlands Community Foundation: Off & Running Fast in 2017

2017 is upon us and brings with it a flurry of activity and projects at the Foundation. To keep track of our many programs and events, we invite you to peruse our newest project: an updated website and calendar. Please visit our new site at  There you will find our calendar of upcoming events along with information about the wonderful programs which deliver those events.  I would like to point out a few events of interest through February.

In January, The Village offered additional training for volunteers under our pilot program. The Film Society presented its first film of 2017 on January 15, Short Term 12, an American film.

February 4th the community will ring out with music as the Young Artists Awards competition is held at three venues across the community: Kentlands Mansion, Kentlands Arts Barn and Kentlands Clubhouse.  The competition is brought to the community by the City of Gaithersburg with an assist from the Foundation.  Our volunteers are responsible for the care and feeding of the 16 judges and the staff, along with assistance with event logistics.  A well fed judge is a happy judge!

On Saturday, February 11th our newest program, The Photography Association, steps out with a special offer to the community.  Stop by the Kentlands Clubhouse from 1 to 4 pm for a romantic photo opportunity with your favorite Valentine.

Thursday, February 16th our Go Green program will bring in a speaker from Montgomery County to provide information regarding the purchase of local produce from CSA farms.  7:00 pm at the Kentlands Clubhouse.

KidServe kicks off its busy calendar of projects helping those in need by making baby blankets for the Shady Grove Pregnancy Center on Sunday, February 26th at the Clubhouse.  Their full calendar is on our website.

The above events deliver on the first two legs of our mission: Arts & Culture and Community Outreach & Volunteerism. Let’s not forget the third leg, education on New Urbanism.  The next New Urbanism lecture is scheduled for February 21st at the Arts Barn and is co-sponsored by the City of Gaithersburg.  Our speaker is Mike Watkins, one of our original town architects, whose presentation in entitled, “The History of Retail in Kentlands & Lakelands”. Our next two lectures are planned with a bit of a twist, and one you won’t want to miss.  Although we will continue to educate residents on New Urbanism and the revitalization of our Main Street, we will begin outreach to the community to educate us about your recommendations.

Whew! This just takes us through February! Planning is already underway for our participation in the merchant-led Kentlands Day on May 6th, the Under the Lights community dinner scheduled for June 17th, our annual meeting scheduled in late June (TBD) and our awesome Kentlands/Lakelands 5k to be held on September 2nd, to name but a few events.  A huge thank you to all of the amazing KCF volunteers who enrich our community experience every day of the year!
