Make Time to Volunteer!

If you are like most people, your calendar is already filling up with 2017 activities. “Save the Date” emails, texts and postcards are arriving.  Despite the relative tranquility of life in Kentlands/Lakelands, we are not immune to the hustle and bustle of modern day living which leaves us frazzled.  It can be a challenge to schedule enough family, exercise and personal care time.  We are all searching for those activities we can cut from our calendars.

One area that can be tempting to eliminate is community service aka volunteering. DON’T DO IT!  Health and wellness studies have found that social interaction and community involvement is beneficial to good health, both mental and physical.  We get a “lift” from helping others.  I’d like to offer a few easy ways to get involved while staying close to home.

Most community residents are familiar with our annual Kentlands/Lakelands 5k and Kids Fun Run, now in its 24th year and scheduled for Saturday, September 2nd.  Many participate in the runs and enjoy the community Expo activities.  Many others enjoy watching the runners pass by their homes and businesses and listening to our well placed bands.  A few may even grumble at the temporary street closures!  Are you aware that it truly takes a village to deliver this event?  We enjoy the support of approximately 200 volunteers who must be recruited each year from the community.  Volunteering can be as simple as spending a couple hours in a variety of activities from Registration and Packet pick-up to the critical Course Marshal role.  Without 60 marshals at their designated posts on race morning, there is no run!

At present we are looking for a few good leaders to manage the many duties leading up to and on the day of this event. If you are well organized and would welcome the camaraderie and fun by being part of the 5k Leadership Team, please step forward.  Openings are available for Volunteer Director, Kids Fun Run Director, Corporate Teams Director, Expo Logistics Director, Community Sponsorships Director, and Raffle and Prizes Director.  Interested?  Want to learn more? Please reach out to me at kentlands@kentlands.org or 301-880-9626.

Not interested in the 5k but still want to volunteer? We need volunteers in many of our other programs as well.  Please visit our new and improved website at kentlandsfoundation.org to peruse our various program offerings and connect with program leaders.  Thanks in advance for all that you do to make our community a great place to live, work, volunteer and play.
